A short message for non-funny people only.

How to be Funny? The simple easy way!

How to make people laugh, Do you have to be a comedian? That is the question.

Being funny is it a natural thing? We are all funny in some way. But the question is can you learn how to be funny?

I think everybody is funny in their own way, being funny is something we all do naturally. When we just joke around and be ourselves that's when your naturally funniness comes out.

Everybody has a different sense of humor, and that is great, have you ever noticed that the people you get along with really well usually laugh at your jokes even if they're not that good! They are enjoying your great sense of humor.

How to have a fun funny attitude.

1. Try to think about the funny side of things, there is plenty of time to be serious, so there is usually something funny about most things if you look hard enough.

When you are in a conversation or you are just thinking about things, you can always find the funny side of most things if you look hard enough. Some things may not seem funny at first but if you don't take it too serious and think how it can be funny, you could probably find something pretty funny about it. If not then you can just say to yourself oh well and laugh.

2. Don't be afraid to express yourself, Just be yourself.

Expressing yourself is so important when you're trying to be funny, the more you get into the funny moment and the timing is right, your expressions and your witty attitude will prevail, you'll will just be funny. This takes a little bit of learning but I believe it can be done if you are not afraid to give it a try.

3. Learn a few jokes.

If you know a couple good jokes, this could be a good conversation opener. But don't overdo it. Being funny is always just being yourself and expressing your awesome personality. Not that you told a good joke. When you express yourself and you are honest and sincere with you own sense of humor, people will like that and enjoy your company.

4. Don't be afraid to let people know what you are thinking about if it is funny.

It may make them laugh, although not everybody will think it is funny, but in your mind if it is funny and you can express that, you will be able to laugh at a lot of things. Some people will wonder how you come up with these funny things and laugh with you.

5. Don't be afraid to laugh loud!

Sometimes just you're laughing alone will make other people laugh, laughing can be contagious.

Living One Day At A Time

Our lives are made up of a million moments, spent in a million different ways. Some are spent searching for love, peace, and harmony. Others are spent surviving day by day.

But there is no greater moment than when we find that life, with all it's joys and sorrows, is meant to be lived one day at a time. It's in this knowledge that we discover the most wonderful truth of all.

Whether we live in a forty-room mansion, surrounded by servants and wealth, or find it a struggle to manage the rent month to month, we have it within our power to be fully satisfied and live a life with true meaning.

One day at a time - we have the abilty, through cherishing each moment and rejoicing in each dream. We can experience each day a new and with this fresh start we have what it takes to make all our dreams come true.

Each day is new, and living one day at a time enables us to truly enjoy life and live it to the fullest

THANKS AND GRATITUDE

Every day should be a good day and you should live it like it's your last. Some people live a life of anger, frustration, pain, jealousy, and/or dishonesty, but all of these things will come to pass when your time here is over. Just take a moment to think, we will not be on this earth forever. One day, we will not have to worry about going to work or how we will make our car payment.

We will not have to worry where our next meal will come from, or how we can buy that beautiful house. At anytime, God could take us off of this earth, so you should appreciate today and not worry about tomorrow, for nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. When you wake up each morning, thank the Lord for waking you up.

When you lie down to sleep at night, thank the Lord for another day. If you have a job, thank the Lord for your place of employment. Ask that He May bless you in everything that you do. Ask Him to give you the knowledge and the wisdom to do your job. If you don't have a job, thank Him anyway. Ask him to direct you to the job that is right for you.

When you are eating breakfast, lunch or dinner, say a prayer. Thank the Lord for providing food and nourishment to your body. If you are healthy, thank the Lord for the health and strength in your body. If you aren't, thank Him anyway for life, and ask Him to heal your body. So the next time that you get mad, think twice.

The next time you complain about something at your job, think twice. The next time you say you wish you had steak instead of chicken, think twice. Be thankful for what you have, and the life that God has given you. Pray and ask the Lord for guidance. Be sincere, as God knows whether or not we mean it from the heart. Help those in need as a gift from your heart, and not so you can get a pat on the back.

Put forth the extra effort in everything that you do. Go after what you want in life, and do whatever it takes to achieve your goals. No matter how perfect you think you are, there is always room for improvement, and an opportunity for you to do better. If you are depressed, don't cry just hold your head up and the Lord will help you through.

Pray and ask the Lord to deliver you from your state of depression. Whatever it is that you are depressed about, God will take that pain from your heart. It may not be at that moment, or that next hour, or maybe not even the next day, but He WILL do it if you just believe in Him.

God may not show up when YOU want Him to, but He's ALWAYS right in time. God will not give us more than we can bear. Sometimes He will present us with issues that will test our faith, but you have to be strong enough to believe that God will do exactly what He says. The message for today is to praise the Lord, have faith in the Lord, give thanks to the Lord, and live every day like it is your last.

Theoretically speaking, if the Lord never does anything else for us, other than wake us up each day, put food in our mouths and clothes on our backs, we should thank Him anyway. He died so that we could have life on this earth.

A leader should know how to manage failure

Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam at Wharton India Economic forum , Philadelphia , March 22,2008 )

Question: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?

Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India 's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India 's 'Rohini' satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.

By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal . It was a big failure.

That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish D hawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 70 am , and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India ]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed.. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.

The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, 'You conduct the press conference today.'

I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

THINGS MAY NOT BE WHAT THEY APPEAR

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family.

The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room.

Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement.

As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it.

When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied,

"Things aren't always what they seem."

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife.

After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. >

When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears.

Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen?

The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused.

The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.

"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied.

"When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall.

Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it."

"Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead.

Things aren't always what they seem."

Communication Skills - Turning Pennies into Gold

How does the expression, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" apply to being an effective communicator? What do we give to our communication partners when we communicate well? We give two key gifts: our undivided attention and clarity of thought.

Only a Penny for Your Thoughts?

Perhaps you have heard the humorous question, "You 'put your two cents in', but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'. Where did that extra penny go?" When we value the messages we hear only half as much as the messages we deliver, our communication is not effective. That "penny" is truly lost.

An Effective Communication Channel

Effective communication is a two-way channel which (1) stays open, (2) receives equal value in both directions, and (3) has an interactive balance between sender and receiver. When we are in a communicative exchange without these requirements, it feels like giving two cents in exchange for one cent.

Undivided Attention

There is a big difference between talking, listening, and communicating. We do not talk "to" people when we communicate well; we talk "with" them. We give attention, listening with empathy and returning clear messages in the appropriate context.

In a verbal dialog, we have the roles of both listener and speaker. If we fail to look beneath the surface—to listen deeply with our eyes, ears, and hearts, we block the channel. We cannot respond meaningfully to messages we do not hear completely. We give undivided attention to our communication partner when we listen deeply.

Clarity of Thought
Likewise, if we fail to state our messages in a clear and simple way, we clutter the channel with static; no matter how much our partner wants to hear our messages, those messages with their intended meanings get lost. Clarity of thought allows us to deliver our messages clearly, simply, briefly, and in context. Then, our "two cents" turns from pennies into gold.

A Golden Communication Exercise

Think about a particular relationship--in your personal life or career--in which you want to communicate effectively. Then, complete these sentences in various ways that apply to you:

We seem to stop communicating effectively when________.

We seem to communicate very effectively when_________.

You may find it valuable to work on this together with your communication partner. This is a very revealing exercise. It will allow you to pinpoint behavioral and contextual strengths and weaknesses in your exchanges with a particular person or group.

Increase Your Communication Skills Today

Give your communication partners today the gifts of undivided attention and clarity of thought. You will find it is indeed "more blessed to give" when you communicate well. Best of all, you will find that your communication skills will double immediately. The gifts of undivided attention and clarity of thought will turn your communicative exchanges from "pennies into gold" and bring immeasurable value to your personal and professional relationships.

Ten Principles of Writing

Clear Writing: Ten Principles of Clear Statement
Principle 1 :Keep sentences short
Sentences must vary in length to avoid boring your reader. But the average length should be short. Fifteen to 20 words per sentence would be a good average.

Sentences are getting shorter. Average shrinkage of sentences in English prose from Elizabethan times to 1900 was from one-half to two-thirds. The trend continues, although more slowly.

Short sentences are not enough by themselves. Long sentences are not the chief cause of foggy writing. Fuzzy words block clarity.

Trim the fat from your writing. Fuzzy words, along with unnecessary ones, make your writing difficult to read and understand.

Control sentence length by noticing the number of lines in each sentence. A typewritten line, or a line in average handwriting, averages 10 to 12 words. Remember to vary sentence length, but worry about those that run more than two lines.

Principle 2: Prefer the simple to the complex
This principle does not outlaw the use of a complex form. You need both simple and complex forms for clear expression. At times, the complex form may be best. So, if the right word is a big word, go ahead and use it. But if a shorter word does the job, use it.

Of the 10 principles, complexity is the one most violated. Nearly anyone facing a sheet of blank paper begins to put on airs. We use three words where one would do. We can't resist the gingerbread of four-syllable words. We write "utilization" when we could just as well write "use," or "modification" when the short word "change" would do.

Unconscious use of complexity is hard to overcome. The roots of the fault are sunk deep in habit.

Writing shorter sentences usually means you use shorter words.

Principle 3 Prefer the familiar word
You need all the words you can master. Perhaps you can get along with a working vocabulary of 5,000 words. But if you want to succeed in our complicated society, you'll be better off with 30,000. However, intelligent people use their large vocabulary only to give clear, exact meaning -- never to show off.

Big minds use little words; little minds use big words.

The most familiar words are 10 short ones: the, of, and, to, a, in, that, it, is, I. They make up 25 percent of all that is written and spoken in English.

The 50 words most often used make up 50 percent of written English. The 1,000 most common words turn up 80 percent of the time and the 10,000 words most often used account for 98 percent of all that is written. Remember, there are more than 500,000 words in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.

Principle 4: Avoid unnecessary words
Most letters can be cut in half and still say the same thing.

Unnecessary words usually are included unconsciously.

One minute spent organizing a mass of details will save several minutes in its writing. Furthermore, a few minutes spent in going over copy and correcting it will also pay off.

Principle 5: Put action in your verbs
"The fullback hits the line." That's writing with an active verb. "The line is hit by the fullback." In this sentence the verb is passive. The electricity has gone. The snap of action is no longer there. The same idea translated into typical business jargon goes something like this: "The hitting of the line is an activity engaged in by the player acting in the capacity of fullback."

It is better to say "the bull sprang into the sale ring" than to say he "came into the ring quickly" or "came in with a quick jump."

Passive

Present design methods are predicated on the assumption that one-piece windshields are preferred by the public.

Active

At present, designers assume the public prefers one-piece windshields.

Passive

When an application of wax is made to this surface a brilliance is imparted to it.

Active

Waxing this surface brightens it.

Principle 6 :Write like you talk

Some grammarians would insist that "write like you talk" is poor grammar. They prefer "write as you talk." But this violates the rule "write like you talk."

"Write like you talk" has its limitations. Most of us do talk rather untidy English. We repeat ourselves. We pause. We hesitate. However, in our speech we do not use long, involved sentences laden with multi-syllable words that usually occur in our writing.

"Write like you talk" also has its limitations when it comes to news writing. Newspapers -- many at least -- still prefer that news stories be written in inverted pyramid style and in an impersonal manner.

Principle 7: Use terms your reader can picture
Avoid fuzzy words. "Conditions," "situations," "facilities," "inadequacies" are typical examples.

An engineer might say an alloy is "not fabricable." This is a general term that might mean several things. When asked for a more specific meaning, the engineer might say "the alloy cracks when it is cold-rolled."

Principle 8: Tie in with your reader's experience
Much communication fails because writers ignore readers' beliefs, ignore how they came by them, and how firmly they hold them.

Words are not fixed. They vary in meaning from person to person, the meaning depending upon the experience of that person and the pictures the words call to mind.

Highly abstract terms often are useful for thinking, but they are tricky in communication because they are open to such wide interpretation.

In trying to persuade readers to accept your words, remember that the meaning they give them will be determined entirely by their past experience and purposes.

To get your words read, understood and accepted, you must have a clear understanding of your own purposes and of the purposes of the reader. If these purposes differ, you have two courses for winning acceptance of your message. You must either change your readers' purpose, or you must show them that though your purposes differ in part, they have, at the same time, much in common.

In writing, don't get lost in details.

It isn't enough to write so you will be understood. You must write so you can't be misunderstood.

Principle 9 :Make full use of variety
The style of your writing will grow as you grow.

If you get "caught" writing simply, you have failed. Good writers work within a strict discipline of simplicity. But they introduce enough variety of sentence length, structure, and vocabulary so that the simplicity is not noticed. As a result, readers never think the writing is choppy or childish.

Variety is a main ingredient in the art of writing. Only practice can lead to the facility that produces variety. Being aware of the point, however, helps one gain facility more rapidly.

Principle 10 : Write to express, not impress
A trap awaits the inexperienced writer. In the unaccustomed medium of the written word, we often try to impress rather than express. We try to be someone else.

No writing is easy. But we make it more difficult by seeking out long, unfamiliar words, and in writing long, meandering sentences.

Motivations for Writing

Motivations for Writing

There are various reasons or motivations you may have for putting your thoughts, ideas, feelings or stories in writing. One reason is to simply provide for self-expression. Another reason is to express your work to others, so that they will read it and perhaps give you some recognition. Finally, you may want to get paid for your work and to gain credibility as a talented writer who has something to say.

Questions you may have include:

What type of writing is mainly for self-expression?
What writing is for expression and recognition?
How do you get rewarded for your writing?

Self-expression
Self-expression is one motivation you may have for writing. Many people like to express their thoughts and ideas in the form of writing. This type of self-expression can be a form of catharsis that reduces stress and worries.

Writing your personal diary or journal can be a way to express your thoughts and feelings. Communicating with friends via email or letters is also a form of self-expression.

You may even write stories or essays for your own satisfaction or to show to some close friends.

Expression and recognition
The next level of writing is motivated by a desire to not only express your knowledge, thoughts or stories in writing, but it is also to allow many other people read that material.

Blogs
Millions express their opinions and experience on blogs or web-logs. Although some blogs on political subjects are used as viable commentary, most of this type of personal publishing consists of snippets of experience and thoughts. The fact that many other people may read your blog and even respond to you about it, can give you satisfaction of having your writing recognized.

Your website
You may even go behind writing down random thoughts in a blog and set up a full website that includes essays, articles, poetry or stories you have written. While a blog or comments on a forum can be poorly written, essays on your own website need to have structure and be well-written. Not only are you expressing yourself in writing, you are also hoping to inform or entertain through excellent composition. You are separating yourself from the pack and establishing yourself as a writer.

Postings
You can also submit your essay, poetry or story to a number of websites that post the work of writers. This can give you more credibility than the same material on your own website.

Credibility and money
The highest motivation for writing is to not only express yourself and get some recognition, but to gain recognition and credibility as an author on a greater level that also includes getting paid for what you write. Getting paid for your work is the ultimate compliment and means what you have to say has value.

There are a number of ways to sell your writing.

Being published
You can submit your articles or stories to periodic magazines and not only see your name in print but also get paid for your work. It also gives you great credibility as a writer.

You can write a book and convince a publisher to publish it. Having your book published by a name publisher and placed in top bookstores can give you a real name. Some writers can make a lot of money from their books, if they become best-sellers.

You might even write a screenplay or television script to sell to a producer.

The big problem is that it is often difficult to get your work published, even if it is good. Publishing is a big business.

Self-publishing
You can sell subscriptions to people interested in their writing. This can be done with hardcopy newsletters that you publish, but it is more often as e-zines or email magazines.

Instead of a subscription, you could gather your material into a larger piece and sell it as an e-book or hard copy book.

At this point, you have turned your writing into a business. You are now a professional writer and not just someone who wants to write and hopes people will read.

Summary
One reason or motivation you may have for putting your thoughts, ideas, feelings or stories in writing is to simply provide for self-expression. Another reason is to express your work to others, so that they will give you some recognition. Finally, you may want to get paid for your work and to gain credibility as a talented writer who has something to say.

But if you are wondering on what to write about, not to worry as I can give you some ideas. You can write about an incident that happened to you or about anything interesting that caught your eye when you were walking on the street. writing style

writing style

Writing style reveals the personality, thoughts, and voice of a writer in his or her prose. Effective writing style depends upon a combination of the following: audience, type of writing, punctuation, word choice, sentence construction, and overall presentation.

Active voice

Writing style is usually improved by using the active voice over the passive voice in sentence construction. Using the active voice leads to more concise, direct sentences.

Passive: The truck was overloaded by the workmen

Active: The workmen overloaded the truck.

The passive is used when the intention is to call attention to the patient, not the agent. He was murdered is stronger than somebody murdered him; the pancakes were delicious is more natural than you made delicious pancakes.

Balanced sentences

A balanced sentence contains similar structures in all its parts. It also expresses balanced ideas.

Marriage has many pains, but celibacy has no pleasures.
(Samuel Johnson)

Thus the Puritan was made up of two different men, the one all self-abasement, penitence, gratitude, passion; the other proud, calm, inflexible, sagacious.
(Thomas Babington Macaulay)

Conciseness

Concise writing comes quickly to the point. It avoids wordiness—unnecessary and repetitious words that add nothing to the meaning.

Wordy: Because of the fact that the watch was inexpensive in price, he bought it.

Concise: Because the watch was inexpensive, he bought it.

More concise: He bought the watch because it was cheap.

Conciseness is relative and must always be subordinate to other considerations. Organization should show intention. Where conciseness becomes the organizing principle, the result is merely laconic.

Connotation

The connotation of a word refers to the special associations, apart from its dictionary definition, that it may convey. The word dog may recall friendship to one reader, but terror to another. Using connotation in a strategic manner, a writer can achieve subtle and exact effects. A lap dog may suggest sophistication; a hound dog may suggest amusement; a cur may suggest social distinctions.

Even words that are synonyms may have different connotations: slender, thin, skinny may each convey different images to the reader's mind. The writer should choose the connotation, positive, negative, or neutral, that supports the mood.

Connotation varies with audience; writing for the learned, connotation may be a matter of etymology (the silent infantry) or allusion (she raised the glass of red wine with rosy fingers); writing for schoolbooks, wariness of caviling (Napoleon was a bigger influence than Frederick the Great on world history provoking But how could Napoleon be bigger when he was so short?); writing for encyclopedias, of using authoritative and dispassionate words (controversial, significant, &c.)

Conversational quality

A conversational tone in writing may help the reader more easily grasp what the writer is trying to say. Flowery language sounds more elegant but occasionally has less clarity.

Flowery: These United States

Conversational: the United States

Flowery: in the year of 1976

Conversational: in 1976

Flowery: at this point in time

Conversational: now

Figurative language

Using figures of speech, like simile, metaphor, metonymy, or synecdoche, can help a writer say something in an interesting way when ordinary language may seem dry. However, figures of speech should be used sparingly; too many similes in one paragraph may confuse the reader. Likewise, metaphors should be thought out. A mixed metaphor may detract from writing style.

Mixed metaphor: When put to the acid test, his principles were found to be as ignorant as a donkey.

Better: When put to the acid test, his principles dissolved.

Fresh language

Good writing style uses original and fresh words. It avoids clichés, which are overused, trite expressions that have lost their impact in meaning.

cliché: Some people can relate to the hustle and bustle of city life.

fresh: Some people thrive on the energy and motion of city life.

cliché: She is pretty as a picture.

fresh: Her amber eyes and radiant red hair overwhelmed me.

Imitation

The Elements of Style endorses imitation as a way for a writer to achieve his own style:

The use of language begins with imitation . . . The imitative life continues long after the writer is on his own in the language, for it is almost impossible to avoid imitating what one admires. Never imitate consciously, but do not worry about being an imitator; take pains instead to admire what is good. Then when you write in a way that comes naturally, you will echo the halloos that bear repeating.

Loose and periodic sentences

The writer can alternate between loose sentences and periodic sentences to achieve variety. Loose sentences, the most frequently used, begin with the main point:

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a very bad novel, having its self-righteous, virtuous sentimentality, much in common with Little Women.
(James Baldwin)

Periodic sentences place the main thought at the end of the sentence:

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also a prison.
(Henry David Thoreau)

There is one thing above all others that the scientist has a duty to teach to the public and to governments: it is the duty of heresy.
(Jacob Bronowski)

Nouns and verbs

Writing with nouns and verbs, as opposed to adjectives and adverbs can strengthen writing style. Specific nouns and powerful verbs can make writing more concise and vivid.

Weak: In 1850, 21-year-old Levi Strauss went from New York to San Francisco.

Vivid: In 1850, 21-year-old Levi Strauss traveled from New York to San Francisco.

Weak: The shrieking Arctic gales sent needles of ice into their faces.

Vivid: The shrieking Arctic gales shot needles of ice into their faces.

Practice

A writer needs to develop his skills through practice. Writing style cannot be forced; it emerges over time through practice. William Zinsser says writing style is not a commodity. "You will reach for gaudy similes and tinseled adjectives, as if style were something you could buy at the style store and drape onto your words in bright decorator colors . . . there is no style store; style is organic to the person doing the writing, as much a part of him as his hair, or if he is bald, his lack of it. Trying to add style is like adding a toupee. At first glance the formerly bald man looks young and even handsome. But at second glance . . . he doesn't look quite right."

Punctuation

Writing style is influenced by punctuation. A writer should use punctuation in a wise manner to achieve the intended effect. Punctuation used poorly could confuse the reader. Keep the following punctuation caveats in mind.

1. A period shows a full separation of between ideas.

Mary woke up early. She showered, ate breakfast, and took a walk.

2. A comma and coordinating conjunction show the following relationships: addition, choice, consequence, contrast, or cause.

Mary woke up early, but she only laid in bed until noon.

3. A semicolon reveals that the second sentence completes what idea was started in the first sentence. It suggests a link between the two sentences, but leaves the reader to interpret the connection.

Mary woke up early; her depression kept her from actually getting out of bed.

4. A semicolon and a conjunctive adverb, such as however or moreover, show the relationship between ideas: addition, consequence, contrast, cause and effect, time, emphasis, or addition.

Mary woke up depressed; nevertheless, she got out of bed, showered, ate breakfast, and took a walk.

5. A conjunctive adverb is stressed when it is preceded by an independent clause ending with a period rather than a semicolon.

Mary woke up depressed. Nevertheless, she got out of bed, showered, ate breakfast, and took a walk.

Punctuation developed to represent prosody and must bow to the way a sentence reads aloud. Omit marks where you would not say them, add them where you would, and keep to the rules where you are not sure.

Sentence length

Sentence length may influence writing style. A parade of short sentences may be considered monotonous and fail to show the relationship of ideas:

Overpopulation is becoming a problem. Alaska is not thickly populated. Many people may move there. It has vast open lands.

By using a variety of sentence structures and lengths, the writer may make his meaning more clear:

Alaska, a relatively unpopulous state, has vast open lands which may attract many people in this time of overpopulation.

Sentence opening

Using a variety of ways to open a sentence may keep the writer's work from being monotonous. Different ways to begin a sentence may include:

prepositional phrase: Without a word, Charles left the room.
adverb: Laboriously, he dragged the large crate up the stairs.
dependent clause: When Flora arrives, we will light the candles.
participial phrase: Peering through the microscope, he discovered a squiggly creature.

Sentence purpose

Good writing style can be achieved by using a variety of sentence purposes. Instead of using all declarative sentences, which state facts, the writer could use:

interrogative sentences-asks a question. (Have you ever considered doing volunteer work?)

imperative sentences-gives a command (Do not assume the administration does not know what is happening.)

exclamatory sentences-expresses strong feeling. (How dare he try to use his political power to force his beliefs upon us!)

Sentence structure

Improved writing style can be achieved through using the different types of sentence structures:

simple sentences
compound sentences
complex sentences
complex-compound sentences

Simplicity

In writing style, using the simpler, more common word over the lesser-known word is preferable. "Avoid the elaborate, the pretentious, the coy, and the cute. Do not be tempted by a twenty-dollar word when there is a ten-center handy, ready and able."

Specific and concrete words

A writer who uses vague, fuzzy language may leave the reader confused or even bored. Using concrete words over abstract concepts may help the reader interpret the writer's intentions more accurately.

Weak: A car went around the corner.

Vivid: A battered blue Mustang careened around the corner.

Types of writing

The type of writing, or rhetorical mode, dictates the writing style. Most writing can be broken down into four types:

Exposition–a genre of writing in which the purpose of the author is to inform, explain, describe or define his or her subject to the reader.

Narration–storytelling, as found in short stories, novels, drama, and personal accounts.

Argumentation–the writer tries to persuade the reader to agree to a new belief or to take a course of action. Also called persuasive writing.

Description–the writer uses sensory details to show the reader what is being written about.

Writing Therapy!!!

Some two years ago one of my uncles gave me some folded papers and asked to burn them up. “What is this?” I asked him and he said “Writing therapy”. Writing therapy? I was surprised to learn this new word. He showed me a small article from a newspaper about this and here goes the article. Many of us write diary daily. They are in a habit of recording their routine. The urge to write, to put our thoughts on paper, is like an involuntary, almost compulsive, act that takes control of our emotions. But is writing a therapy?

Writing is a meditation:
it settles the mind. It is a de-stressor: it releases tension. It is like a confessor who keeps your secrets safe. It is also a mood-changer, with the capability of making you happy. It is an outlet, for it helps you let go of your negative thoughts. It is creative, cathartic, curative.

Quite simply, writing is beyond words, Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to his daughter while confined to prison; Anne Frank from her secret annex. Hugh Prather writes notes to himself; Franz Kafka did not even want his writings published. Generals narrate anecdotes from their lives; so do politicians, bureaucrats, artists. And, not to be left behind, there is the classic The Diary of a Nobody whose author asks: Why should Mr Pooter's diary not be immortalized in print—merely because he is not a Somebody?
Writing is for Everybody, it is a device used not only by those in the profession.

Forms of writing:
There are many forms of writing; there are many styles. We have different ways of expressing ourselves; we also have varied reasons for doing so. But when pen and paper make contact, thoughts are released and the mind gets more focused as we are instinctively drawn towards the quiet center of the self.

Writing is a disciplinary act that gives new insights into yourself and your relationships. It is also completely honest—for what do you gain by lying to yourself? It is a therapy prescribed for Everybody, not just for the disturbed, distressed or dying. Writing is a spiritual quest, it is the soul searching for truth.

A poet writes because it becomes too heavy if he doesn't write. He unburdens himself by writing. The poetry is a catharsis. The poet feels good once he has written something that was persistently there asking for attention.

Writing affirmations and other positive statements help you feel good about yourself. There is a certain finality, a sense of commitment, involved in the act of writing. Leading personal growth programs such as The Forum have exercises which ask you to write a letter or a communication to help give language to your feelings. You are encouraged to write what you want to see or do. This is said to have a miraculous impact on your motivation levels.

Writing letters helps in improving communication and relationships. Recommends John Gray in Men Are From Mars,Women Are From Venus: "If your partner has upset you in some way, write them a Love Letter, and while you are writing ask yourself how this relates to your past. As you write you may find memories coming up from your past and discover that you are really upset with your own mother or father. At this point continue writing but now address your letter to your parent. Then write a loving Response Letter. Share this letter with your partner...

Writing for therapy helps erase effects of trauma
Six years ago, Vietnam veteran John Mulligan was a homeless "shopping cart soldier" in San Francisco's North Beach, a man wracked with flashbacks and numbed by post-traumatic stress disorder. But his life took a turn during a veteran's writing workshop conducted by noted author Maxine Hong Kingston.
At the first workshop, Mulligan wrote about a horrific scene from the war: his buddies turning their weapons on a water buffalo for fun, sport, and misplaced revenge. The blood, the noise, the sense of loss and waste were all there.
Dozens of studies have found that most people, from grade-schoolers to nursing-home residents, med students to prisoners, feel happier and healthier after writing about deeply traumatic memories, says James Pennebaker, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Texas and leader or co-leader of many of the studies.
Pennebaker's interest in the potential of writing therapy was sparked by conversations with government polygraph operators. A criminal's heart rate and breathing, he learned, is much slower immediately after a confession than before. Since then, he's spent much of his career proving that we can all feel better after confronting the past through writing.
The effect isn't just emotional, Pennebaker says. One of his studies, published in the "Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology" in April 1988, found that college students had more active T-lymphocyte cells, an indication of immune system stimulation, six weeks after writing about stressful events. Other studies have found that people tend to take fewer trips to the doctor, function better in day-to-day tasks, and score higher on tests of psychological well being after such writing exercises, he says.
Writing off asthma and arthritis
A new study, published in the April 14, 1999, issue of the "Journal of the American Medical Association," shows that expressive writing can even ease the symptoms of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
Joshua Smyth, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at North Dakota State University, and colleagues asked 70 people with either asthma or rheumatoid arthritis to write about the most stressful event in their lives. The study participants wrote about their emotional pain for 20 minutes straight on three consecutive days. Another group of 37 patients wrote about their plans for the day.
Four months later, 47 percent of the group that wrote about past traumas showed significant improvement -- less pain and greater range of motion for the arthritis patients, increased lung capacity for the asthmatics -- while only 24 percent of the group that wrote about their daily activities showed such progress.
Pain from the past
Researchers don't know exactly why writing about painful events can improve health, but the answer probably lies somewhere in the still-mysterious connections between stress and disease.
Numerous studies have found that prolonged emotional stress can weaken the immune system, promote heart disease, and worsen the course of arthritis, asthma, and many other diseases. In one particularly startling example, a study published in the December 16, 1998 issue of the "Journal of the National Cancer Institute" found that elderly people who were depressed had nearly double the risk of developing cancer.
Putting traumatic memories into words can help ease turmoil and defuse the danger, Smyth says. "Writing gives you a sense of control and a sense of understanding," he says. "To write about a stressful event, you have to break it down into little pieces, and suddenly it seems more manageable."
If writing can help ease the symptoms of arthritis and asthma, other stress-related conditions are bound to follow, Pennebaker says. He and his colleagues are now studying writing as an infertility treatment, and they're also looking to see if such therapy can prolong the lives of heart disease and breast cancer patients.
For his part, Smyth is studying veterans and victims of sexual abuse who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Despite success stories like Mulligan's, there's little scientific evidence that writing can help treat such a severe psychiatric disorder, he says.
A home remedy:
Writing therapy provides insights, reflection and suggestions that help deepen our journey of self-discovery that directly impacts our creative and artistic path. Artistic expression requires a measure of awareness and that awareness can be deepened through writing. Writing intensifies and broadens our awareness of ourselves and our surroundings including other people and that can be invaluable for us as artists. It is the very core of how we communicate as creative human beings. Just as dancers communicate with movement, musicians with song, actors with emotions, visual artists with images, writers communicate with the written word, which is an extremely clear, concise and straightforward form of expression.
The informal, safe and personal process of therapeutic writing involves putting thoughts and feelings into words as a psycho therapeutic tool. It is based on the belief that recording memories, fears, concerns and/or problems can help relieve stress, promote health, well-being and lead to more profound personal growth and artistic freedom. We can view this type of writing as a vital exercise for all artistic disciplines that strengthens and fortifies our creative spirits and provides a release for our sensitive souls.
Being an expressive therapy, it helps to give us an honest insight into our real selves and relationships. The very act of putting pen to paper (or fingers on a typewriter!) has always been refreshingly cathartic—a limerick on the back of a grocery list, a beautiful thought on a piece of paper, your daily journal, a few lines of poetry. So go ahead and write down whatever coursing through your mind, and watch your true self unfolding before you on this journey of self-discovery. And never mind about grammar!

Lashkar-e-Taiba & ISI Responsible For Cricket Debacle: India

CENTURION – Within minutes of Pakistan’s last ball defeat at the hands of Australia at the Centurion ground in South Africa, Indian Minister for Extrenal Affairs S M Krishna has sensationally pointed the finger at Kashmir-based militant group ‘Lashkar-e-Tayba’ which it alleges is supported by Pakistan’s InterServices Intelligence Agency (ISI).

‘We know there is no way Pakistan would have lost to Australia after being in a winning position towards the end. We have intercepted calls from Lashkar-e-Tayba masterminds made to the Pakistan dressing room in those last few minutes of the game. You can see why Misbah-ul-Haq went down and asked the physio came out with the message that they have to lose the game.’ He remarked.

Earlier, Home Affairs minister P Chidambaram had talked of Lashkar-e-Tayba using earnings from betting on allegedly fixed matches to fund what he called ‘Terror attacks’ on Indian soil.

“Its the oldest and quickest way to make money to be used for Terror attacks against India”, he said. “Daud Ibrahim has done it in the past and now Lashkar-e-Tayba has bought the Pakistan team and I suspect even the Australian team. The international community must take notice of this injustice on India and punish Pakistan severely. We will take this to the United Nations Security Council and get both teams banned”

“Team India is the best team in the world at the moment and despite not winning any games in the ICC T20 and going out in this tournament, they will still be the number one team in the world. Infact we have arrested today a Pakistani ISI agent who masterminded the fixing of the matches in T20 World Cup in June this year”, added Chidambaram.

Reaction on the streets to India going out of the ICC Champions Trophy has been surprisingly muted. Fans interviewed minutes after Australia’s victory at Centurion declared they never expected India to fare well in this tournament.

“Everytime Pakistan plays we know the games are fixed by the ISI, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Daud Ibrahim and Al Qaeda. They know they cannot beat us fair and square so they have resorted to paying the officials and umpires to make it difficult for India to win. There’s no point watching cricket anymore whenever Pakistan is involved. I just want to kill myself”, said a teary-eyed 24 year old cricket fan in Delhi before jumping off the 7 ft high boundary wall around his slum and breaking his arm in the process.

India is also said to be launching a probe into the rain that washed out their game against Australia on the 28th, giving a point each to both teams which led to India having to rely on Pakistan’s result against Australia today. Alleging the involvement of Chinese weather satellites, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has promised to investigate claims from his cabinet that Beijing had assisted Pakistan’s ISI in changing the weather conditions at Centurion, causing a massive downpour that swept away India’s hopes and rested them firmly on Pakistan’s shoulders.

Meanwhile in another development, a few members of the Pakistan cricket team had to be taken to hospital after being out of breath due to laughing uncontrollably at an Indian TV Programme.

‘The boys are fine, we just happened to tune into this programme, I think it was a comedy show, on Zee News in the dressing room and man those guys are hilarious, we just couldn’t stop laughing’, said star batsman Shahid Afridi before bursting into another fit of laughter and being stretchered off to the emergency ward himself.

NEWS JUST IN:
In response to the Indian allegations, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik called a press conference just moments ago and accepted the Indian claims as true, while promising a full investigation into ISI’s alleged link to the match result at Centurion today.

Winners And Losers

The Winner is always part of the answer;
The Loser is always part of the problem.

The Winner always has a program;
The Loser always has an excuse.

The Winner says,"Let me do it for you;"
The Loser says;" That is not my job."

The Winner sees an answer for every problem;
The Loser sees a problem for every answer.

The Winner says," It may be difficult but it is possible";
The Loser says,"It may be possible but it is too difficult."

When a Winner makes a mistake, he says," I was wrong";
When a Loser makes a mistake, he says," It wasn't my fault."

A Winner makes commitments;
A Loser makes promises.

Winners have dreams;
Losers have schemes.

Winners say," I must do something";
Losers say, "Something must be done."

Winners are a part of the team;
Losers are apart from the team.

Winners see the gain;
Losers see the pain.

Winners see possibilities;
Losers see problems.

Winners believe in win/win;
Losers believe for them to win someone has to lose.

Winners see the potential;
Losers see the past.

Winners are like a thermostat;
Losers are like thermometers.

Winners choose what they say;
Losers say what they choose.

Winners use hard arguments but soft words;
Losers use soft arguments but hard words.

Winners stand firm on values but compromise on petty things;
Losers stand firm on petty things but compromise on values.

Winners follow the philosophy of empathy: "Don't do to others what you would not want them to do to you";
Losers follow the philosophy, "Do it to others before they do it to you."

Winners make it happen;
Losers let it happen.

How to motivate yourself to study.

1.Remind Yourself of Your Purpose - What are your goals in life? Where do you see yourself 5, 10, or even 20 years down the road? The time that you spend studying now will help to make your future dreams and aspirations a reality. Whether you are working towards a degree, a special skill, or some type of personal enrichment, the act of studying is like a bridge between where you are now and where you want to be in the future!

2.Realize Knowledge is Power - A well-educated person is a powerful person. Knowledge is priceless. A well-educated, knowledgeable person is a person who is better able to navigate and excel within the world around him/her. Think about how much more knowledge and ability you are gaining each time you sit down to study!

3.Dare Yourself to Succeed - Make it a point to dare yourself to surpass any real or imagined barriers that have been standing in your way. Personal achievement and fulfillment are wonderful things; allow yourself to do the things that can only contribute to your personal achievement and fulfillment - like studying!

4.Make a Decision - The difference between a mediocre result and an extraordinary result is more often than not related to effort. Do you want to be a mediocre student or person, or do you want to rise high and sail the heights? Forcing yourself to sit down and study, even when you don't feel like it, is a personal achievement in and of itself. Build on that!

The bitter truth (poem)

Girls are here & girls are there
it seems in the world, boys are rare

Girls can be found everywhere
but good girls are found no-where

In front of girls, boys feel scare
With one girl, many boys have affair

Girls are demons & girls are monsters
they eat boys, like tasty burgers

They use us like income machines
to fulfill their immense dreams

If you ask them to be their boyfriend
I am sure it is going to be your end

They shake boys like thunder shakes the earth
it’s like you have your rebirth

You say them: "you're my honey"
they will leave you behind with no money

Girls are world's biggest mystery
this is a fact since our history

Without girls, the world will be peaceful
every place of the world will be beautiful

But its fact that without girls
nothing will remain but only skulls

now don't point me with a gun
Mudi wrote this poem just for fun
